Lack of Motivation

For my thesis at SVA MFA Illustration I am creating a series of short stories, and making a single conceptual image for each. When I say short I mean 500-2000 words short. Anyway, here is a set pieces about my sisters lack of motivation. Out of the 25 sketches I sent my advisor, I really liked four of the sketches and went straight to finish. After discussing the pieces my advisor, we came to agree that they aren't there yet in concept, though they are nice images in whole.

Man, beginning of the third week...take it easy Father Time!

So before I got really gross and, for the most part, inappropriate, I did consider a career in Children's Book Illustration, but its a tough place to navigate. Personally, I like to believe all children are minions of evil and shouldn't be given too much credit when it comes to being innocent, but eh, we all have our own ideas on that topic.

Anyway, I'm no longer interested (MAYBE), but I came across an amazing blog for those of you who may still be! Curious Pages explores children's books that straddle the line between safe and controversial; the ones most of us go back to now and have that double take moment...

...you know, like when you first REALLY understood that Spice Girl's song you always sang as a baby.

So, I myself enjoy people watching. A lot. These images below are all from my current sketchbook. All of the drawings (individually) are pretty quick direct 45seconds-2min drawings with a ballpoint pen. Yeah I tried to be all fancy and set up lighting for the images, I know I'm retarded. Boobs. Also be kind and text "yele" to 501501 on your cell phones to donate 5 bucks to all those people who are in a crap ton of heartache over in Haiti. They need it. And if your curiouso check out Urban Sketchers (which I am a member of :]) to check out a fund raiser they did using location drawing on a poster to raise awareness.

-P.S. everyone should be reminded the Society of Illustrators student competition deadline is like January 27th so get on it!

Whoo! First post!

I was doing some research on birds for a piece I'm currently working on and came across the work of Andrew Zuckerman. Amazing!

He currently has a book available cataloging just his bird photography, (for those of us who love to keep an interesting library) but all the images are also available on his website!

These photographs are excellent to reference the smallest details of a vast variety of birds!

Another source you all may want to be familiar with if your work references animals a lot is the BBC Wildlife Finder.

When I have an image in my head nowadays, I just paint it. I dont worry about whether if this is gonna look good, or anything like that. So this is what these are mostly about.

Hey everyone, if your reading this I hope everyone had a great time at Tae's Illustration Holiday Party, shit was fun and it was awesome seeing everyone outside of classes.
so uh I've yet again fallen into a black hole of watching Transformers three times a night, and re-runs of Ghost Hunters until the sun rises, then complaining that I have no time to finish anything. Actually I really have been working on a bunch of different stuff, just I have yet to actually get any of it 100% done. SO I'll share a few things with you, so I don't feel like a complete asshole as this semester is basically done tomorrow.

FIRST OFF I've got this Bells and Whistles assignment thats due for Soojin Buzelli's Big Bad World Of Illustration class thats way over due. Last night I finished inking it now it's sitting in my "things I should have gotten done 3 weeks ago but will have to finish when I'm back from winter break" list of things to do :/ I'm actually looking forward to finishing it though, at first I had a hard time with her art direction simply because we both have totally different directions with illustration. Soojin is a great AD, but I feel like I'll never have anything in her publications because when I sit down to do an illustration or come up with an idea, I literally say to myself "okay how can I make this look a little fucked up" and thats not necessarily the direction someone would want for their magazine promoting new household products or business resourcing. ANYWAY, so the theme for the illustration was Bell's and Whistles. I decided to go with a cool underwater sorta scene where I'd turn all the sea life into OMG YES bells and whistles!!! How awesome right? I went with that environment for an Illustration because many of her editorials/artist whom she works with do really sweet Illustrations that have to do with animals doing cute things or blah blah something with animals. I'm still working on the compo and re-arranging the fish/eels (which are all cleverly turned into bells with their mouths), so the end result WILL look a bit different. I got my satisfaction in the octopus and the seaweed, after that I kinda lost steam, and by that time Optimus was beating the hell out of The Fallen so I kinda just zoned out for a little. I'm not kidding. But yes, like I said I'm gunna try to finish it during break.
As for the second image I'm posting its one of the several Illustrations I'm re-doing for Tomer's portfolio class. This was supposed to be about a mental illness and we had to basically just do an editorial style illustration based on any mental disorder we wanted. So naturally I picked something that would smack me back into my Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Dumb and Dumber phase. I chose Multiple Personality Syndrome, and at first had a hard time solving it. I was doing a lot of cliche like sketches dealing with people looking in the mirror while brushing their teeth, cept the person staring back was like a Pogo the clown/John Wayne Gacy character. Tomer wasn't really feeling that, and we discussed all the cliche sorta things to steer away with certain topics. Mirrors and reflections being one of them. So I tried to go with more of a person inside of a person sorta thing. I'm not sure how I'm going to re-vamp this one, but I'll be sure to post it if it tastes good when I'm done.

Thirdly is just a snapshot of the inking I've been doing for another project for Tomer, its dealing with the Humana Festival poster for this coming year. Tomer actually did a really beautiful book cover for them 2 years ago (i think it was 2 years) and once I make more progress on that I'll elaborate on it. But yeah theres a little ya know of what I've been doing with it.

AND lastly (amongst many other things I've chosen to leave out) Kyle and me did the first run of prints for his documentary that I did the poster art for back in October. It looked really awesome seeing one of my posters actually being printed for the first time, so I of course took a few photografas and yeah, hopefully in the spring I'll have finished a few more thesis posters for the Dusties.

BLAH BLAH OH and in less than two months is the deadline for the Society of Illustrators student competition, and for the first time I'll be entering a bunch of juicey stuff. SO we're looking forward to that. and by we're I mean Optimus. and Me. and the Cube. OKAY BYE I'll update again during this week when I'm home and ya know. Doing laundry and watching Judge Judy.

I used up all the 'juice' (as stanley martucci would call it) in the beginning of the semester, and I've been drained. I couldnt produce anything, BUT after several naps and lbs, I am once again inspired and ready to work!

Before we start, I'd like to mention a little something about OHGER.

Created and managed by Robert Zimmerman himself, the founding father of Drawger and Illoz. There are 20 members in it, and the selection process is...tough. the exisiting members have to VOTE YOU IN. but, there really isnt much to lose guys! Especially you seniors- you can't join this after one year of graduation. So why not join now!? Well.. there is 50 dollar per year but thats less than 5 dollars per month. and possible growth is dependent on you!

And I also encourage you juniors to apply as well. I WANT TO SEE MORE SVA KIDS THERE!

I've been working on some new things for Marcos and Tomer, and upon my never-ending cruise on the internet during this I found these two digital artists whom I think some of you would love to see, if you haven't already. (More specifically Nate/Johnny/Ray)

this guy seems really cool, I think a lot of his coloring is actually done in Illustrator, the details on a lot of it look almost 3d like they were done in Maya or something. He has a great "poster" like take on his images.

And this guy (he goes by the pen name of NOOK) who I found on Behance.net, he actually does do half of his images in Maya/3d Studio and then renders them in photoshop. The illustrations he does are really interesting and have a great color/realistic sense to them. Sometimes a lot of his stuff is just floating in white space but I think thats more of his style then a lack of content thing. The one thing that bothers me is that when I look at his images I cant tell if the image is about the actual content or "feeling" hes trying to capture, or if it has become just about the tight realistic detail in his 3d environments and nothing else. I really am interested in how long it takes him to pull these off. I doubt he can finish an image with the 3d rendering for an editorial or anything short term. But then again who knows he could be a robot.

Last Year's Junior Thesis

Hey guys, some people ask me about thesis stuff, so I thought I'd just post it here.

I saved some sketches from thesis.. These are just some of them..

I did my thesis on Turandot by Giacomo Puccini.

First, ofcourse.. sketches! Whole semester of SKETCHES! it was tiring..

these arent the first ones.. but when I started to get the idea..:

1. The bamboo piece getting there, and those heads on a stick eventually became lanterns.. but tom said i need to be more SEVERE with them... so...

2. my bamboos (the last one on this set) became bigger.. so i decided to go for large scale paintings to involve the viewers more (unless you are really tall)

3. lanterns sketches! i got started painting after this point.

this interation was too weird for me. i dont know faces looked funny, sizes were weird, so i changed it around..

gong piece just sorta came out of while i was watching The Banquet for research of emperial china. Just sorta became my favorite piece! After few hours starting on the gong:

I could only manage to pull off 3.. So I was thinking about how I could make it work as 3 pieces. First of all I had vertical likes and round objects in all 3 to architecturally structure the series.. Also I set the mood by sharing the same reds on all the paintings. I played with the sky to order them chronologically.. (bamboo-late night, gong- sunrise, lantern-morning). Also placing the gong piece in the middle, I was able to pull 2 other pieces together as one series, because its most symmetrical.

I also wanted one color to dominate each piece, no matter how many colors I used (except black... but i did use black gesso though..)

I hope its helpful, (yuri).

There are amazing juniors working on their thesis.. I'm totally gonna be blown away this year. and be ashamed.

Thesis Poster Designs

Hello everyoneee. So I know this is pretty much an Illustration/Cartooning based blog/community, but I was told by the Goddess of Illustration-Gumbo; Tae, that I could update with some side projects I've been doing. In the summer I worked at an ad agency that makes movie posters and since then I sorta fell in love with that whole world of design. This year I decided to try helping my film major friends by designing payoff size posters for their thesis films. So far I finished this one for my friend Kyle Mumford.

Full size: 27x40 with a half inch boarder, 300dpi

The movie is called Mumford's Law, and its a documentary about his relationship with his father, and his father's life. Its a really deep serious movie and really hit home with some aspects of my life. I enjoyed doing the poster, as he wanted to capture a relatively serious tone to the way the movie is going to be advertised. I'm pretty happy with the way the final turned out, as it was a lot of practice and I'm still working on grasping my typography skills better. Lemme know what you guys think. Also I figured what the hell and posted all of the original comp ideas for this poster which each went through revision after revision until the final. NOMNOMNOM I think soon I'm going to post all of the posters I worked on over the summer too so stay tuned you beautiful children you.

Nick, bidding low on jobs in order to "get any work at all" is the most negative, self-defeating approach to your career that I can imagine. One more time: if a major publication or agency calls you, they do so not because THEY'RE poor, but because they've seen your work and think it can enhance the quality of their brand. What makes you think they called you because you'd be cheaper than Gary or Anita? If it's good enough for you to get the call, it's good enough to be paid standard rates. There's no tiered system in this field, aside from this: those with work good enough to get calls and those who without, and those willing to ask for professional fees, and those who set low-value on what they produce. The business side of this field is about negotiation, and you've started yours out assuming you're worth less. Don't be surprised if your clients agree with you.

Tae ! thank you for involving me in this project/community, what a great idea.

ok, so I'm struggling right now with figuring out my thesis. Btw you were absolutely right about my mini thesis being like 3 separate things, and while its not absolutely terrible the fundamental approach of piecing a picture from several separate elements is what's causing my current problems. This will have to be rethought. Still, here it is, I'd appreciate criticism/advice

Hey,

Just to put another example of what else can go on this blog, i decided to put something i learned in class the other day..

It was from digital portfolio class, and it was about copyrighting on bridge..

I'd like to remind you its not the 'Official way' to copyright your work (you'd have to do it through Copyright.gov) but according to the teacher it would somewhat (better than nothing.. which means you can somewhat get more money in the courts i suppose) protect you because it will embed your info into the images you put up online.. so here we go:

i opened Adobe Bridge and selected a folder containing images

1. click on a picture

2. Make sure you are on METADATA tab and not the KEYWORDS tab. and click on IPTC Core.

3. Enter your information on Creator, Email, Website, Copyright Notice, and Right Usage Terms.

In Right Usage Terms, put in 'No usage without prior written consent.'

I just wrote it as i learned it! if i'm misinformed in anyway, comment away!

Fuyuko Matsui is currently an artist that i'm obsessing about. She's 33 year old ( i think) japanese female artist and uses traditional nihonga techniques.. I think they are absolutely beautiful.. shes really pretty too:

OH HAAIII okay, so I think this whole community blog thing is a great idea tae, and I hope it picks up. with saying that, heres one of my latest images. I did this for the Visual Arts Student Association, (vasa) for the SVA Halloween Party thats happening in two weeks. Everyone should go and have a great time! First place in the costume contest wins a macbook!

I did this for Stanley and Cheryl's fantasy class.
We had to do about a sorcerer or sorceress.

I think the head came out pretty big, but I still like it and enjoyed working on it!

After failed attempts at creating online communities of SVA illustration and cartooning majors.. and possibly ALUMNI as well... I decided (15 minutes ago in my studio) to give it another try!
